About the authors


Before joining Ashridge, Andrew was a Fellow of the Centre for Business Strategy at London Business School. Prior to that, he spent six years with McKinsey & Co in Los Angeles and London. Andrew has authored 10 books based on his research and has also published numerous articles including eight with the Harvard Business Review. Andrew is author of two classic texts "Corporate Level Strategy", John Wiley & Sons, 1994 and “Designing Effective Organisations”, Jossey Bass, 2002

Jo Whitehead is a Director of Ashridge Strategic Management Centre, which was formed in 1987 to research issues concerned with the management of multi-business companies. Jo’s research is in the broad area of strategy, including strategic decision making, business unit strategy, corporate strategy and the role of Chief Strategy officers and their departments. Jo’s other professional interests includes running and providing management programmes and consulting to client companies. Before joining Ashridge, Jo was a Vice President and Director of the Boston Consulting Group (BCG). He worked in the London, Los Angeles and Atlanta offices and acted as BCG’s Director of Energy Research and Marketing. Jo also worked as an Assistant Professor at London Business School, where he taught primarily on Executive Education programmes. Jo holds an MA from Cambridge University, an MBA with High Distinction from Harvard Business School and a PhD in Strategy and Organisation from London Business School where he is currently a Fellow of the Centre for Management Development. Jo co-authored the book Think Again - Why Good Leaders Make Bad Decisions and How to Keep it From Happening to You, with Andrew Campbell and Sydney Finkelstein (Harvard Business Press, 2009). He also authored What you need to know about Strategy (Capstone, 2011) and co-authored Strategy for the Corporate Level (Wiley, 2014). Jo is also Vice Chairman of the Cambridge University Musical Society and a founding member of the England over 40s Touch Rugby team.



Previously, Michael was a Senior Fellow at the London Business School’s Centre for Business Strategy, and a Vice President with the Boston Consulting Group. His research interests are concerned with corporate strategy and the management of multi-business companies - and he runs the Centre's programme on Leading a Group of Businesses.



Marcus holds a joint appointment at Ashridge and London Business School. Before this, he co-founded, and then sold a strategy consulting company. Prior to that, he worked with the Boston Consulting Group. Marcus is co-author of “Corporate-Level Strategy: Creating Value in the Multibusiness Company”, as well as articles in the Harvard Business Review and other leading journals. Marcus has a double first from Oxford and an MBA from Harvard, where he was a Baker scholar and Harkness Fellow.
