Supporting the leadership challenge

What makes these programmes different?

These programmes are different. They have been commissioned for IND and IND only. They are not ‘off-the-shelf’. They are designed to help meet the challenges of our delivery plan. But they are also personal development programmes that will equip us individually with the business and leadership skills that will make us leaders of change.

To deliver the asylum and immigration strategy, the Home Office’s Immigration and Nationality Directorate has commissioned Ashridge and Lane4 to design and deliver three business and leadership development programmes. The aim is to build capability and capacity to sustain change and establish continuous performance improvement to deliver current and future operational targets.

IND leadership capabilities

To support the design and delivery of these unique IND programmes, we have developed a framework of leadership capabilities to supplement the broader Home Office core competency model. This framework helps to define the behaviours needed to enable us to develop as leaders of change and to meet the challenge of our delivery plan. They have been developed following a series of interviews and focus groups around the country with a cross-section of staff from all levels and sectors of the business.

The eight key capabilities are:
  • Delivering results
  • Providing business meaning and direction
  • Developing quality people
  • Committing to change
  • Managing people
  • Engaging communication
  • Collaborating in partnerships
  • Leading and energising
How will the programmes help me?

The programmes will focus on your abilities to contribute to our business and sharpen your management and leadership development skills. There will be greater clarity about your role in delivering IND’s plan, including its strategy and objectives.

The programmes will give you a clear personal development plan to meet your personal expectations and aspirations.

You will also find that the programmes give you a fresh perspective and outlook.

What does this involve?

The programme will combine project work, off-site modules, learning support groups and one-to-one coaching. The objective of these unique learning experiences will be to create a high performance environment within IND by developing the individual and collective skills, knowledge, understanding and behaviours to optimise the talents of all IND staff.

Who are the programmes aimed at?

‘Leading to deliver’ is, at present, a series of three programmes:

  • Emerging leaders’ programme

This is for those who are already a leader of some kind who wish to further develop their personal and team management capabilities. Participants will typically be in the grade range EO/IO to SEO/Inspector, although some Grade 7 may wish to attend..

  • Aspiring leaders of excellence programme

This is for experienced managers wanting to refresh their leadership skills and maximise their performance and contribution to IND. Participants will typically be in the grade range HEO(D)/SEO/Inspector to Grade 6 with some very promising HEO/CIO in addition.

  • Leaders of Excellence Programme

    Self explanatory.
